Patjhad Ke Phool

Based on Anton Chekhov’s “Autumn Flowers”

A once grand zamindar's family, the Rathores: mother, son, Ranveer, daughter Manjusha.

The thorn in the flesh of the mother is the new doctor in town, a  Dr. Ravindra Singh Ranavat who happens to be the son of the late Rathore sahib's driver, and unknown to both  the only remaining  servant, old Shamsher's nephew.  Knowing his antecedents, the Ranavats judge him differently.

Ranveer, the decadent son falls sick. The family doctor says he has to be seen by a specialist like Dr. Ravindra Singh Ranavat.

Reluctantly, the Thakurain (Mrs.Rathore) sends a note to the new doctor.

They wait all night but he comes only next morning, impeccably dressed, very grave. He orders the bed to be put into the hall but does not even help the old servant and the ladies pull the bed out. Manjusha is shocked by his rudeness.

Manjusha nurses her brother and before it is morning she too has high fever. Her mother drags another bed to the hall and nurses both her children, worried and unhappy.

Next morning, Dr. Ravindra Singh Ranavat shows Mrs.Rathore how to wash Manjusha's head to cool down her fever, by putting Manjusha's head on his knee and washing her head with mugs of water from her head into an empty bucket. Manjusha is smitten.

The mother asks him to tea on her son and daughter's insistence.

The Doctor has the tea and counts his fee then leaves. Manjusha defends him saying he's too clever for us.

After that, Manjusha pines for him, and watches him pass, from her seat at the window every day, several times.

Ranveer goes back to gambling, borrowing money, womanizing.

One morning the village marriage broker gives them a photograph of Dr. Ranavat and offers him as a groom for Manjusha. There is one demand, he says: the doctor wants Rs. 60,000 dowry. Mrs.Rathore asks him to go away.

Manjusha sees it all. The mother and son know that not having money hurts more than the disgrace of getting an offer through a marriage broker.

Actually the doctor tells the broker to find him any bride who is able to bring 60,000 rupees to buy this house, that's all. Manjusha is falsely under the impression that he chose her.

Ranveer convinces his sister to marry Dr. Ranavat if he comes to ask for her hand. Manjusha waits. The doctor passes by many times, but never stops.

What more tragic events fill Majusha’s life till Dr Ranavat  gives her something to live for, at the end of her life makes the rest of the telefilm.
